8 Demanding Airports for Private Jets and How to Plan Inflight Catering for Each

Demanding airports for private jets are some of the most rewarding destinations in business aviation. Short runways, alpine valleys and busy city slots ask more of crews, and they also ask for catering that is planned with the same precision as the flight. When every minute on the ground counts, a well-prepared order is one less thing to think about.

Global Diners prepares VVIP inflight catering in its own kitchens in Paris (Le Bourget), Nice and Madrid and from kitchens serving more than 2,500 airports worldwide. Here are eight airports that call for careful planning, from Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB) to Teterboro (KTEB / TEB), and how to plan the catering for each.

Why some airports ask for more planning

A few factors shape every demanding airport: runway length and slope, terrain, elevation and temperature, local weather, and traffic. For catering, these translate into practical points:

  • Weight planning: on short or high-elevation runways, crews manage weight closely, so compact, well-portioned catering is ideal.

  • Tight ground times: slot-controlled airports favour precise delivery windows.

  • Fewer ground services: at smaller airports, catering is often best loaded at the previous stop.

  • Seasonal peaks: winter resorts and event weeks concentrate traffic into a few days.

1. Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB)

Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB) is famous for its runway crossing Winston Churchill Avenue, a road that closes for each movement, and for its runway of under 2,000 metres beside the Rock. Crosswinds around the Rock and a compact apron make the approach memorable. For catering, guests often fly in from Spain or the Riviera, and we recommend loading round-trip catering at the departure airport, for example in Madrid (LEMD / MAD) where delivery is at the FBO.

2. London Heathrow (EGLL / LHR)

London Heathrow (EGLL / LHR) is one of the world's busiest airports, with strict slot control and limited space for business aviation. Most private flights to London use dedicated business airports, but when Heathrow is required for a connection, precise timing is everything. Catering is coordinated with the handling agent and timed to the slot.

3. London City (EGLC / LCY)

London City (EGLC / LCY) sits in the heart of the Docklands with a steep 5.5° approach and a short runway, used by aircraft certified for steep approaches. Short turnarounds are the rule. Compact catering, delivered on time and stowed quickly, suits the City's rhythm perfectly.

4. Courchevel Altiport (LFLJ / CVF)

The Courchevel (LFLJ / CVF) altiport has a short runway of around 537 metres with a gradient of about 18.5%, open to specially qualified pilots in visual conditions. Jet guests usually land at Chambéry (LFLB / CMF), Geneva (LSGG / GVA) or Annecy (LFLP / NCY) and continue by helicopter or turboprop. Global Diners can cater the jet leg and prepare a light selection for the transfer.

5. Samedan, St. Moritz (LSZS / SMV)

Samedan (LSZS / SMV) is one of Europe's highest airports, at about 1,700 metres in the Engadin valley. Elevation and temperature shape aircraft performance, and the winter season brings a concentration of traffic. Planning catering early for St. Moritz weeks is the best way to enjoy an alpine arrival in comfort.

6. Nice (LFMN / NCE)

Nice (LFMN / NCE) is one of Europe's busiest business aviation airports, with a runway along the Mediterranean shore and coastal winds. Its demands are about organisation: stand availability during the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix, ground power planning and timing. This is home ground for Global Diners, with our own kitchen and planeside delivery. Read what's new in our Nice airport 2026 guide.

7. Aspen (KASE / ASE)

Aspen (KASE / ASE) lies at around 2,400 metres in a narrow Rocky Mountain valley, with specific procedures and a busy winter season. High elevation and summer heat shape performance, so weight planning matters. Catering for Aspen is coordinated through our kitchens; see our guide to private jet catering at top US airports.

8. Teterboro (KTEB / TEB)

Teterboro (KTEB / TEB), just outside Manhattan, is one of the busiest private jet airports in the United States, with noise rules and dense ground traffic. Several FBOs serve it, and catering is delivered according to each FBO's arrangements, timed to departure.

The more demanding the airport, the simpler the catering should feel: right quantities, clear labels, and an order that arrives exactly when the crew expects it.

Choosing the right menu for a demanding destination

Demanding airports often go hand in hand with special trips: a ski week in the Engadin, a weekend on the Rock, a board meeting in the City. The Global Diners menu card is designed to adapt to each format, with every item prepared to HACCP principles, kept in the cold chain and labelled for allergens.

  • Quick city hops to London City or Teterboro: breakfast boxes, finger food, salads and pastries that are easy to stow and serve.

  • Alpine flights to Samedan or Aspen: warming dishes for the galley oven, soups and comforting desserts after a day in the mountains.

  • Island and coastal trips to Gibraltar or Nice: Mediterranean plates, seafood and fresh fruit.

  • Return legs: when ground services are limited, a second set of meals loaded at departure keeps the return flight just as refined.

Our own kitchens in Paris (Le Bourget), Nice and Madrid are natural loading points for European missions: catering is delivered planeside at Paris (LFPB / LBG) and Nice, and at the FBO at Madrid (LEMD / MAD). Elsewhere, our kitchens prepare the same menu card, with delivery following each airport's arrangements.

Smart planning tips for flight departments

  1. Order 24 hours before delivery at order@globaldiners.com.

  2. Share aircraft registration, airport, FBO, delivery time and passenger count.

  3. For small or remote airports, load catering at the previous stop.

  4. Plan weight-aware portions for short or high-elevation runways.

  5. For multi-leg trips, use one menu card across the whole itinerary; see our approach to global aviation catering coordination.

Event-Season Private Jet Catering at Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB)

Gibraltar's single runway runs across the isthmus beneath the Rock, and its private traffic mixes business visits to the territory's finance, gaming and shipping sector with leisure trips to Sotogrande and the western Costa del Sol. Summer brings polo, yachting and villa holidays, September brings National Day, and December adds festive travel. The apron is compact and the easterly Levanter wind can change approach conditions, so timings may shift. Order catering two days ahead in busy periods rather than the standard 24 hours, share passenger numbers early and agree delivery timing with your handler. Chilled seafood, salads, cold meats and sealed individual trays suit quick turnarounds and the warm climate.

International Polo Tournament at Sotogrande at Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB): July to August

The summer polo tournament at Sotogrande, a short drive across the border, is one of the main events of the European polo season, with high-goal matches over several weeks. Players, patrons and guests use Gibraltar as the closest airport to the fields. Plan orders two days ahead and match the sporting mood: grilled meats, Andalusian salads, gazpacho and fresh fruit. Celebratory desserts and champagne-friendly canapés for final weekends are available on request.

Gibraltar's event and holiday dates can move from year to year, so please confirm the timings with our team when you place an order.

Things to do around Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB)

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is Gibraltar's main draw, reached by cable car or on foot, with sweeping views across the Strait to Morocco and the famous Barbary macaques. St Michael's Cave hosts concerts in a natural limestone auditorium, and the Skywalk offers a glass platform high above the sea. Dolphin-watching boats leave from the marinas to see pods in the bay, and Europa Point at the southern tip has a lighthouse and mosque facing Africa. Beaches at Catalan Bay and Eastern Beach suit relaxed afternoons, with fishing-village charm on the eastern side of the Rock.

Culture and heritage near Gibraltar (LXGB / GIB)

Gibraltar's strategic position has shaped its history for centuries. The Moorish Castle dates from the period of Islamic rule, and the Great Siege Tunnels were carved into the Rock by British soldiers in the 18th century. The Gibraltar National Museum covers Neanderthal finds and military history, and Gorham's Cave Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site linked to Neanderthal occupation. Trafalgar Cemetery recalls the 1805 naval battle.

Engadin Airport at Samedan, in the canton of Graubünden, is the highest airport in Europe and lies a short drive from St. Moritz. Its altitude and mountain approaches require specific pilot training and suitable aircraft. Private passengers come for St. Moritz, Pontresina, Celerina and the Upper Engadine lakes, for winter sports and for the town's famous snow events on the frozen lake. Winter is the busiest season, from late December to March, with summer flights for hiking, cycling and mountain hotels.
