Basque Country Private Jet Catering: Bilbao (LEBB / BIO), San Sebastián and Biarritz (LFBZ / BIQ)

Basque Country private jet catering brings together three airports and one of the great food cultures of Europe. Bilbao (LEBB / BIO), San Sebastián (LESO / EAS) and Biarritz (LFBZ / BIQ) sit within an hour's drive of each other on either side of the French and Spanish border, serving Bilbao's business district, the elegant bay of San Sebastián and the surf and golf of the Côte Basque. Few regions in the world combine so many celebrated restaurants, markets and pintxo bars in such a small area, and passengers often hope to find that spirit on board.

Global Diners prepares VVIP inflight catering in our own kitchens in Paris, Nice and Madrid and in our kitchens across more than 2,500 airports. Our Madrid kitchen and our kitchens across Spain and France serve the Basque coast with the same Global Diners menu, the same allergen labelling and the same specialised team. This guide explains how to bring Basque flavours into the cabin, how the three airports work together and how to plan the region's busiest weeks with calm. It complements our guide to private jet catering in southern France.

Spain's northern coast: our team serves Bilbao (LEBB / BIO), San Sebastián and Biarritz with one menu.

Three airports, one Basque coast

Each of the three airports has its own character, and many itineraries use more than one of them. The table below summarises how they fit together:

Bilbao is the economic heart of the Basque Country, home to banks, engineering groups and energy companies, and its exhibition centre hosts trade fairs all year. San Sebastián is the culinary capital of the region, with its old town packed with pintxo bars and some of the most famous restaurants in Spain. Biarritz, on the French side, is a Belle Époque resort with surf beaches, a casino and a lively summer season.

Basque flavours that travel well

Basque cuisine is built on the sea, the mountains and the market. On board, we choose dishes that keep their quality in the cabin and can be served without fuss. Here are some of the regional touches our team likes to add to the Global Diners menu:

  • Pintxos: small bites on bread, from anchovies and peppers to Idiazabal cheese and jamón, arranged on platters for an easy service.

  • Bacalao al pil-pil: salt cod in its own emulsion of olive oil and garlic, packed with reheating guidance.

  • Marmitako: a warming tuna and potato stew from the fishing ports, ideal for a winter flight.

  • Txangurro: spider crab baked in its shell, a festive dish for special departures.

  • Talo and txistorra: a corn flatbread with a thin smoked sausage, perfect for a hearty breakfast.

  • Gâteau basque and goxua: the almond and cherry cake of the French side and the creamy layered dessert of Vitoria.

Cheeses from the Pyrenees, Espelette pepper, Bayonne ham and the chocolate of Bayonne round out a menu that tells the story of the whole coast. Txakoli, the light sparkling white wine of the region, and Rioja reds are offered subject to local rules, alongside fresh juices and sparkling water.

In the Basque Country, the best meals are shared: a few pintxos, a glass of something local and a conversation that lasts the whole flight.

The Basque calendar: festivals, food and sport

The region is lively all year, with several weeks that bring extra flights. Planning a little earlier than the usual 24 hours keeps them especially smooth:

  • January: the Tamborrada of San Sebastián, when the whole city drums through the night on 20 January.

  • July: the San Sebastián Jazz Festival and the summer music season in Bilbao.

  • August: Aste Nagusia in Bilbao and the Semana Grande in San Sebastián, with fireworks over the bays.

  • September: the San Sebastián International Film Festival brings actors, producers and press to the city.

  • Summer on the French side: surf competitions in Biarritz and Anglet and golf on the courses of the Côte Basque.

  • December: the Feria de Santo Tomás, a traditional market fair in Bilbao and San Sebastián.

Basque restaurants are often booked months ahead, and many visitors fly in specifically to dine. For passengers who would like to take a favourite dish home, restaurant pick-ups can be coordinated on request, with the same allergen labelling and packing as our own menu.

Crossing the border: Spain and France in one trip

Because the airports are so close, many itineraries cross the border by road and use whichever airport suits the schedule: arriving in Biarritz for a few days on the French coast and leaving from San Sebastián or Bilbao after a dinner on the Spanish side. Our team prepares each order with the right packaging and delivery details for the airport you choose, and we can plan an onward leg to Madrid (LEMD / MAD), served from our own Madrid kitchen with delivery at the FBO, or to Paris (LFPB / LBG), where our Le Bourget kitchen delivers planeside.

Packing, quantities and crew meals

Most flights from the Basque coast are short European sectors to Madrid, Paris, London, Geneva or the Mediterranean, typically one to two hours. For these, a cold starter, a hot main course with reheating guidance and a dessert make a complete service, while pintxo platters suit even the shortest hop. Every item is portioned in galley-ready trays or sealed, labelled bags, sauces travel separately and our kitchens follow HACCP principles and a careful cold chain. Crew meals are packed apart from passenger service. Halal, kosher and alcohol-free menus are available everywhere in our network.

Planning Private Jet Catering Around Bilbao and Bizkaia's Busiest Weeks at Bilbao (LEBB / BIO)

Bilbao combines all-year corporate traffic with a busy summer of music, sport and festivals. In July and August, concerts and the city's great fiesta fill hotels and fill the restaurants, and Loiu welcomes more business aviation arrivals than usual. Trade fairs and big football matches create shorter spikes during the rest of the year. Order earlier than the standard 24 hours when travelling in these periods, confirm passenger numbers as soon as your guest list is settled, and agree delivery timing with the handler. For quick turnarounds, choose pintxo boxes and sealed individual portions; for longer sectors, hot Basque dishes in thermal carriers.

Aste Nagusia (Semana Grande) at Bilbao (LEBB / BIO): August

Bilbao's Great Week is a nine-day festival led by Marijaia, a smiling figure who opens and closes the celebrations, with fireworks contests, concerts, Basque sports and open-air bars along the river. The city fills with visitors, and hotels book out. Order several days ahead and confirm numbers early. Pintxo selections, marmitako in thermal carriers and txakoli suit festive flights, and our team will arrange delivery with the handler around evening traffic.

Concert, fair and festival dates in Bilbao vary every year, so please confirm timings with our team when you order.

Things to do around Bilbao (LEBB / BIO)

The Guggenheim Museum is the starting point for most visits, with its titanium curves and Jeff Koons' flower-covered Puppy outside. From there, the riverside walk along the Nervión leads past the Zubizuri bridge to the Old Town. Funicular rides up Mount Artxanda give city views, and the Vizcaya Bridge in Portugalete, a hanging transporter bridge, can be crossed on foot along its top. The coast offers surfing at Sopelana, the dramatic hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Urdaibai biosphere reserve around Mundaka. Football fans can tour San Mamés, the home of Athletic Club, and golf courses lie close to the airport.

Culture and heritage near Bilbao (LEBB / BIO)

Bilbao was founded in 1300 and grew rich on iron, shipbuilding and banking. The Old Town's Siete Calles and the Gothic Santiago Cathedral recall its origins, while the Fine Arts Museum holds Spanish and Basque masters. The Vizcaya Bridge, completed in 1893, is listed by UNESCO. The Arriaga Theatre and the Azkuna Zentroa cultural centre, a former wine warehouse, show the city's taste for reinvention.

Also nearby: Biarritz (LFBZ / BIQ)

Biarritz is built around its beaches: the Grande Plage below the Hôtel du Palais, the Côte des Basques for surf lessons and long-board sessions, and the sheltered Port-Vieux for calm swimming. The Rocher de la Vierge footbridge and the lighthouse give wide views over the Bay of Biscay, and the Aquarium de Biarritz suits families. Anglet adds a long run of surf beaches and pine forest trails. Golfers can play Golf de Biarritz Le Phare, one of the oldest courses in France. Inland, the villages of Espelette, Ainhoa and Sare and the rack railway up La Rhune make a slower day, while Saint-Jean-de-Luz and San Sebastián are easy excursions along the coast.

Biarritz grew from a whaling and fishing village into an imperial resort after Empress Eugénie made it her summer home in the 1850s; her villa is now the Hôtel du Palais. The town keeps Belle Époque and Art Deco villas and a Russian Orthodox church. Bayonne has a Gothic cathedral listed by UNESCO as part of the routes to Santiago de Compostela, half-timbered houses along the Nive, and the Musée Basque, devoted to Basque language, sport and traditions.
